Opasquia is Oji-Cree for "nothingness;" no roads, no cities, it is just you, the canoe, and the natural world. The Opasquia Park is home to hundreds of Canadian Shield lakes, some of which are unexplored waters. The water flow in the park is considered an anomaly due to the fact it flows in the opposite direction of other watersheds. The geological formation called the Cocos Plateau causes the water to flow to the Northwest, instead of the Northeast as seen in other water systems in Northern Ontario . The Opasquia Moraine, another geological feature lies at the Southern edge of park. This is a ridge of glacial till two kilometers (1.2 miles) wide and over one hundred meters (330 ft) high that rises high above its surroundings and indicates the former limit of glacial Lake Agassiz .
